What is an ex-libris and what is a bookplate?

Exlibris aka bookplates are a printed or decorative label pasted into a book, often on the front endpaper to indicate ownership. Simple typographical bookplates are termed "book labels". Antique collectors often look at the name and date listed on the bookplate to authenticate and date old books. Bookplate designs used to be incredibly detailed and personalized but bookplates are no longer as popular as they once were. Now, bookplates are a specialty item. Bookplates often bear a motif relating to the book's owner, such as a coat-of-arms, family crest, badge, motto, or a bookplate design commissioned from an artist or designer. These antique labels included the books owner's name and inscription such as "from the books of..." or "from the library of...", or in Latin, "ex libris" on the bookplate. The earliest known labels of ownership of books or documents date from the reign of Amenophis III in Egypt (1391−1353 BCE). Today, there are more than 50 "national" societies of bookplate collectors exist, grouped into an International Federation of Ex-libris Societies (FISAE) which organizes worldwide congresses every two years. Since the 1950s, there has been a renewed interest in the collection of bookplates. Now, everyday readers can buy their own bookplates and labels to personalize their favorite books and journals using this beautiful bookplate.
